The papers of Byron Gilman of Lynn, Massachusetts, consist primarily of a diary and his personal narrative while in the Union Army during the Civil War. The diary relates mostly social and entertainment events in the Lynn, Mass., area and in Boston, as well as his interests in music. The personal narrative as a soldier relates his nine-month stint as a musician in the 8th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. After being mustered out, Gilman was involved in the recruiting and enlistment of soldiers in the Heavy Artillery. The collection also contains an 1830 list of the Massachusetts Militia Company.
